Life will challenge you with so many hard situations. Sometimes you can’t do anything about those situations and it will stress you out. If you’re stressed out, it might help you to make a list of everything you’re stressed about. Work through that list and cross out what you cannot control. The remaining items on the list will be the things you can control. The best thing here is that you can do something about them and they are worth giving your mental and emotional energy to focus on them.
For me, I have a cheesy ritual for letting go of the things I can’t control. While coaching soccer, I cannot control the weather (which has been awful this spring!), a slue of other activities that my players participate in, the opponents, the parents, and the other teams’ coaches and their strategies. I write things like this on a piece of paper and then crumple it up and throw it in the trash as a sign that I’m not wasting another minute worrying about it. It gives me peace of mind and directs my energy to what I can control: how I interact with and respond to my players.
