I have a dear friend who is planning her wedding. She shared with me the verse she held dear to her heart when it comes to her hopes for marriage. Many times, you hear some very traditional verses shared in weddings. “Love is patient. Love is kind…” (1 Corinthians 13) These are wonderful passages in the Bible! But my friend chose a different verse.
Romans 12:9-12 says: “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”
Love in action. Love as a verb. Devotion, honor, serving one another. I thought to myself, what an amazing word to frame a lifetime with someone! Of course, ‘love in action’ doesn’t have to be specific to marriage. It can be in our community, our families, or our friends. How are we serving one another? How are we really loving those in our lives? God is our foundation of this love. He is this love.
