“One day at a time.”
There are seasons where I’m sure you have repeated this mantra to yourself many times throughout the day. Moments of loss and grief. The aftermath of a relationship ending. Finals week at school. Crunch time on a multi-week project at work. Hard work during recovery.
“One day at a time.”
It’s nice phrase that has certainly brought me to the next day, gotten me through moments of high stress and given me hope that, yes, this too shall pass.
However, this isn’t a “get out of jail” phrase that we should be pulling out whenever the enemy has our hearts and minds captive, or when life just feels a bit too crushing.
Jesus instructed us live this way. Every day. Whether we need it, or not.
In Matthew 6:34, he tells us to live one day at a time. To not worry about tomorrow and ask God for daily provision. Then, we can lean into his mercy, that’s new every single morning (Lam 3:22-23). What an invitation!
I think if I’m able to be a bit more aware of accepting this daily invite and put it into daily practice, when I really need it, it won’t feel like such a slogging, deep down in my soul cry, but more of a friendly comfort and promise that’s already being put into practice.
